Hive® 'The Game'

Hive is a board game with a difference. There is no board! The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.
The soldier ants battle to keep control of the outside of the hive, whilst the Beetles climb up to dominate the top. Spiders moving into holding positions as the Grass Hoppers jump in for the kill. Keeping one eye on the hive and the other on your opponents reserves, the tension builds as one wrong move will see your Queen Bee quickly engulfed; .... game over!

The first time I took a look at the picture above, I must admit I was intrigued with Hive. Before I knew what type of game it was, the plot or even how to play it, I knew it would be an interesting game. About one hour after seeing it, I got a call at the game store. It was my friend and board game enthusiast Pat who said, I have this game you need to check out, I'm on my way. He showed up with a odd circular carrying case with the hive logo on it, perfect for travel. He laid out the tiles and gave me a run down of the rules.

The premise is this, there is one hive. Two queen bees are waging war to control the hive, in order to do so they need to immobilize the opposing queen and thus remove her from the hive. The queen bees have a horde of allies in the form of different insects who have specific movement which relates to the way they actually function in real life. Each turn after the queen is placed the player may add an insect to the hive or move one that is already in play. There are only two rules. The slide rule: if you can slide a tile out of a spot, you can move it and you cannot break the hive.

Many strategies have been used and it seems that each game is different and as compelling as any game we've played. Lastly, there soon will be released a mosquito expansion. The mosquito can take on the persona of any insect that it begin's its activation touching. Its the first time we've looked forward to mosquitoes in the summer.
